Default Supermarket petrol

I recently put some standard Tesco 95 into the beater (2 litre Megane) and the car has been running hesitantly on start up ever since. The first five minutes on starting the tick over is "lumpy" and throttle response slow.

I wonder whether this might be the petrol I put in.

I'll try Optimax or BP Ultimate next time and see if there's a difference.

Any thoughts?

From what I've read, the petrol itself is no different to what you get from the likes of Shell, BP et al - indeed, it comes from the same refineries.

The difference is that it doesn't have the additives, detergents etc that the chains put into the fuel sold at their own sites.

What effect, and how noticeable it is, it has in practice, I don't know.

I use Tesco 99 in mine and also V Power. It seem to go better on the Tesco stuff and has been proven to be a good fuel in a test that was carried out a while back.

I'd never use 95, even from Shell etc.

I like the Tesco 99 stuff, but I've used it only rarely. Mostly V-Power/Optimax for me.

I bet he's a lot of fun at parties.

The additive thing is what I've heard. My S did run very nicely on Tesco 99 when I could get it (Bristol).

I've found the Tesco 99 stuff pretty good and since I've moved closer to a Tesco, I currently buy petrol for the S there.

I'll run the beater dry and try a nice tasty tank of Optimax!!

In France where there's a rather big price difference i almost always tank supermarket petrol (98 RON). Never felt any change whatsoever.

Tesco 99 might be a bit different to normal supermarket fuel in that it contains a proportion of bio-ethanol, rather then being run-of-the-mill stuff straight from the big boys' refineries.

According to their website, this creates few engine deposits, which are normally the bubgear of ordinary supermarket fuel.

They're just starting to roll this out in my part of the world, but it still means a 25 mile round trip to my nearest Tesco that sells it, so any costs saving is rather offset!
