Suzuki Swift
Going to be replacing the Mrs car shortly and was very impressed with this car when I test drove it earlier today.
It felt well built, handled well and had plenty of power if you pushed it hard enough. Not sure the sales guy enjoyed me establishing this fact in the pouring rain though
Plenty of room in the back (although I think my broody wife would prefer more boot space). However for the cost, I can't see us getting more car for our money anywhere else. The alternatives we have considered are the Yaris (although she isn't that fond), a Seat Leon or a Mini (couldn't afford a new one though).
So we'd be going for the 5 door model but as yet unsure of whether or not to go for the GL (1.3) or GLX (1.5) models. Price difference is

Great little cars. I've driven a few of them now, right up there with the 500 for stylish little hatchbacks. Solidly built like you say, and a nice comfortable ride on motorways too.
None of them have enough power to pull your foreskin back but that's not why you buy them.

I drove a Swift recently, think it was the "sport" version? really quite roomy inside but no room for dog in the boot so a no go. If you're prepared to travel for a deal call 01786406200 (phoenix stirling)ask for Stevie Fraser, tell him martin sent you, he'll do his best to get a deal for you.
I like them
unfortunately the sport only has a single folding rear seat
and not reallly enough load space
so it has been ruled out for/by the other half
shame, I would probably have enjoyed driving it the odd time I was behind the wheel

Air con is a total no-brainer. Got to have it.
The GLX also has keyless start I gather. Its great. Not sure if it has keyless entry. Would hope so as that's even better. Audi seem to call this an 'advanced' key I've discovered since a mate of mine is ordering his next company car. Cheek of it!
It does have a keyless entry system.
Hopefully I can stall the dealer and get it on a 59 plate. Only problem is that we're buying through a scrappage scheme which leaves little room for bartering
Will see what he throws in when I dangle a Yaris quote under his nose.
