Today I bought
Cheers Col, I just hope that it's not a false economy ... it being new to me one always has doubts! The seller seemed very genuine and it has a full Mercedes service history, and all MOT certs and as Ron says it had done only 13k miles in the last 10 years.
Insurance is a shock though ... I have only had one quote in the same ballpark as the S, that would cost me £380 pa, most other quotes were over £500 not sure why this car is so much more expensive to insure than the S?
He never lost the taste for Becks and it was the last drop of beer he had before moving on.
Well, since Pol put his post up regarding the Audi he bought I thought I would put mine up with the car I just bought to waft around in now the S has gone, it cost me the same as Pol' A5 the princely sum of £2150 for a circa £40K car when new 15 years ago that seemed like a good price to me. So here she is a CLK 230 Kompressor with only 60000 miles on the clock, and I have to say I haven't stopped driving it yet, so much fun and an absolute pleasure to drive. It is of course a total contrast to the S and that is what I wanted, something that didn't demand my full attention all the while, something to relax in and chill me out a bit on the roads.

Surely a classic just for its lines.

Oh, highly appropriate - the beer and the Benz are both Bremisch! Built in the former Borgward plant in Bremen-Sebaldsbruck.

I imagine that following heavy bombing raids on Bremen in '45, most production of everything stopped. What was left of the 1938 'Picture-book factory' re-started making hand carts and casting portable ovens. It's a bit different today:

The bit on 'this' side of the road is the former Borgward plant, which makes the sports cars. The bit in the distance is newer and makes the C-Klasse.
Been there,I used to sell them Pop rivets!
We also had an Isabella in the 50s and a Taunus 12M "Puckel"
Back on topic,I have also hankered after older Luxo barges but have the fear of catastrophic failures of unobtanium components so hats off to those who are not such cowards! :-)

Nice find Paul, and good choice. So much style and confort for the money. Purchase of the year? Probably.
Betcha you've reached forward to unhook the hood, forgetting it's not the S :-)

Cheers, it does have very nice lines, I need to take a proper polisher to it though, my DA polisher is not even close to affecting the paintwork ...
Thanks Tony, no .... but what I have done is pulled the centre glove box up going for the hand brake! 9 years of habit to break there!!!

That does look tidy - good find.
It might be worth trying Poorboys Black Hole on the paintwork - it's very good at covering fine swirls and holograms on dark paint. There's a fair acreage of bodywork to machine polish!

Becks; my favourite beer. My wife, who was an accountant at Scottish & Newcastle aeons ago, used to buy it very, very, very cheap from the staff shop. Allegedly the guys on the bottling line used to alter the 'Best By' date and so it went to the staff shop for clearance before it was out of date. We were awash with it!
Interesting factoid; the malt for Becks is sourced from Simpsons Malt at Berwick upon Tweed. I know this as a friend - and fellow student - was on placement there. IIRC he was also caught shagging his girlfriend on a dining table by her mum, who was also a work colleague of him at the time.
The stuff one remembers...
