Default Track "Experience Days" etc

I seem to recall the concensus on most of these "drive a Ferrari around a track" thing is that they are a bit of a con with regard to actual time spent driving and how much you are allowed to push the car.

I also seem to remember that someone did one particular one which involved several cars and was actually rather good.

Anyone got any recommendations?

Also, can anyone recommend any "regular" trackday companies for taking one's own car around a track with & without instruction, particularly up here in the frozen wastes. Or is it simpler to go direct to the tracks concerned (Knockhill in this case).

(Got talking to a friend's friend in the pub last night and she wants to take her MR2 roadster out on track)

Well THE recommended one is the Palmersport day at Bedford. I realise that's not up there in scotland, and I've not done it myself, but you get single seaters, caterhams, 350Z, Clio cup cars and others and get to thrash them. It's not cheap though at about

She's got the right idea.

I think these track days are basically too cheap to be any good. Unless you do a Formula Ford, or something.

Palmer day is good for track time and variety, and they encourage you to push the car, unlike most 'experience' days.

Cheapest way to do it in someone elses car is to approach the race school at the circuit.

You're tied to what they have (at Combe it's a Focus, Impreza and Formula Ford, and I suspect there is a policy of graduation from one to another) but you get to drive with an instructor and learn race craft at the same time.

I think it was Neil (Bass) who got some freebie that was really good, but it was very expensive IIRC.

Knockhill do quite a lot of courses, including your car on track.

I did an on-road performance car thing up there, but I think you can get trained on track in your own car - check out the website.

If they don't do it, call them up and discuss - Gentoo got a fair bit of track training when he first got his S, and I think it ended up being tailored to what he wanted once he got to know the instructor.

Mind you, I don't think it did him much good - he was desperately slow on the road, and eventually bought some girlie german thing IIRC

They don't do it as part of their voucher thing any more but I plan on phoning them to see if they could do something for me in the Civic, Tuition + Skid Pan + Track Tuition at the moment they only do OTR tuition and skid pan for a little over

Knockhill isn't a great track imo but perhaps good for someone who wants to try it for the first time. Have a chat to TrackScotland and size them up. best info i have.
I raced it once - loved it.

One of the few UK tracks (along with Oulton, Donington and Cadwell Park) with any elevation, making it much more challenging than the usual airfield based circuits.

If Ian Forrest is still running the race school there, tuition should be excellent too.

Just don't do their action days.....

I'm sure I read recently on Pistonheads that they've clamped down on the chav aspect.

Can't remember how, mind.

Cheers for your input folks, I'll send on a link to this thread
