.....So, they made a 2.2% underwriting profit in 2006, and a 1.8% loss in 2005. Of course, they make some profit by investing the premiums they receive but this is not huge, as they end up paying it all out in claims and expenses anyway.
Another, very important, factor for motor insurance in recent times has been the guarantee of a hire car replacement while your one's off the road. I was astonished at the impact this has had on the motor line.

I wouldn't be surprised to find more changes afoot to offset this cost, either through further premium increases, or even withdrawing the offer of a hire.

Mind you, I think that's getting a bit OT now so I'll stop!

The opposite of which part of that statement?
It has been shown that people who spend money modifying their cars actually are more careful and cause fewer accidents.

The ins. companies are lobbying for stricter regulations surrounding hire car replacement.

I think if you amend that to some people who mod etc.

Remember, for every true enthusiast who cares for their car there are 10 oiks in Saxos/Corsas/whatever.

Ignorance - that is it.

I resent subsidising my insurance for other people's unwillingness to exact the truth

No, I used to be involved in the financial analysis of insurance companies, and spent a fair bit of time on Motor Insurance with visits to the offices of some insurers (Equity Red Star, Summit, Chaucer, Highway, Admiral).

All very revealing.

What precisely did you do (genuinely interested)?

I recently renewed my insurance and one thing I discovered was that none of the 3 insures I aproached for quotes were able to receive a full list of my modifications via email.

I ended up having to fax through to them.

I'm not really interested in changing anyone's mind on here.

I am interested in why some people think the way they do.

I do however have an interest in selfishness or ignorance (if I'm charitable) that causes great inconvenience to me or people I care about.

On the matter of style, you can find sycophancy, ignorance, lightweight discussion and desperate flirting, in any number of threads in o/t.

That's not really my bag though, so if I offend, I agree the ignore button is the perfect solution.

Alternatively, don't try to be clever or punch (type?) above your weight.
