Thanks Dan (I think).

It did indeed start as a little project, but has now evolved into something that eats up all of the spare time and money that comes my way. I finish work at 1600 and don't have to be at home to prep dinner until 1830, so there's 2.5 hrs per day (no car on wednesday - shooting instead). Friday (if possible) is a late one, 1200 till 2100 so another 9 hrs there. If I can manage to get away for 4 hrs or so at the weekend, then I'm there, or in my garage, cleaning, prepping, doing off-car stuff.

All in all, with marital duties (cleaning, washing up, DIY) included, I reckon an average week sees 10 hrs put in and not a lot to show for it!

Over the time since I've had it, I've put in over 2,500 man hours and well over

My arse!

Looks really good though mate, I'm quite impressed with the amount of work going into this. I'd love top see it once you've got it all sorted out, just don't paint it purple like someone in Collingrad did!

OK, sometimes it can be as late as 1630, but not usually earlier than 1600 - my boss has line of sight on the exit door

And anyway, you can talk, scanning the forum at 0920-something instead of pretending to work!

I don't pretend to work...I'll happily admit I have no job here, no one to teach and nothing to fix 'til I leave for Nelson

My day consists of drinking copious amounts of tea, reading the paper, doing the crossword and spinning dits...just thought I'd let you know

Having seen the Landy and the 'engine' first hand, it's clear that ALOT of work has gone into this rebuild, and alot of work is yet to be done!

Good on you mate, keep up the good work.

Tonight's update:

yes, well, without wanting to steal his thunder, Loftust rocked up and was abused from minute 1 by the monkeys that populate the environs of the secret landy rebuilding bat cave / evil volcano lair / pit of depravity that is, in an attempt to diagnose his S2000 woes (no avail, see "clanky 'orrible noise" thread...

All banter was in the finest traditions of our mutual employer, of course, and Loftust took it like a man.

His first impressions of my acquaintances' simian characters were further confirmed by the arrival of the mini-car transporter and the declaration of "scrap day", which saw grown men whooping, hollering and ripping any useful parts off a number of otherwise condemned machines. They then leapt into the scrap metal skip and started lobbing engines, gearboxes, brake disks etc into the cars... some through the windows, some via the doors... All in all, it was like something out of Mad Max III - beyond the thunderdome.

Needless to say, not a lot of work got done this evening, especially as my acquisition of new canvas hood frame parts was rudely interrupted by mrs_6301 arriving and telling me that I was already late for Scouts

Sum total of work this evening consists of tea drinking and talking a good project, but all is not lost! I did manage to break out of the Gulag at lunchtime today for a quick skirmishing detail, and am now armed with wire brush and flapper disc for the grinder (for painting chassis etc), oodles of lovely green oil and 8 of NGK's finest new spark plugs.

Tomorrow will be a little quiet too, as I am the duty bod at the rifle club.

More picturey goodness forecast for Thurs, with the possibility of a day off on friday (yet tba with the boss).

[QUOTE=ian_6301,Apr 26 2009, 07:36 PM] Here's a bargain: New/old front timing cover that I acquired for two evenings' labour on a mate's BMW brakes:

Regretably, it's from a very early range rover (I think) as it has the shorter oil pump gear case and a hole for a mechanical lift pump. ... All in all, a bargain at

no problem.

I have the old timing cover available if you want it? It's exactly as per the new one, but with a long pump housing, not a short one. The whole thing is grotty and has evidence of some (cavitation?) damage to the water pump backing plate.

Lots done today:

Crankshaft and pistons are in, camshaft fitted, new bomb-proof timing gear fitted along with sump (now shiny black) and front cover.

There was a big faff with the uprated oil pump kit though... The idea was to fit standard (long) gears into a short housing, plus adapter plate. Turns out that the adapter plate then renders the housing about 3mm longer than standard. Solution? The upgrade kit came with some extra long gears , but... the driven shaft uses a female end. The distributor that I wish to use requires a male end...

Queue the 10 tonne Floor Press! 5 mins and some suitable swearing later, we have extra-long gears with the correct shaft - bingo!

The final job that I got done today was the re-cutting of the valve seats and lapping of exhaust valves.

I do have pics, but it's late, I'm knackered. Updates and 2 days of pics tomorrow.
