Had to let her indoors take the S2000 to school today (She's a teaching assistant, I'm not some perv...) and have just had a text...

"This is BRILLIANT. The kids think I'm cool and I haven't stopped grinning all morning. I NEED a soft top. Buy me one"

Now I know she won't want anything modern ideally so it'll be something like a spitfire or midget or similar.

With a budget of £2k to £4k, what would you buy?

Ideally something that can be tarted up nicely and a bit of a project would be ideal..

We have the CTR as our 4 seater so only 2 seats required (and an Espace that I really MUST get round to getting rid of).

I need a bigger drive...

I'd say MX5 also.

Never driven or been in one, but most who have seem to rate them.

 

I doubt you'll find even a reasonable MG Midget/Austin-Healy Sprite for that budget - beware the cosmetically attractive tarted up examples... threre are plenty about, rust is a particularly bad enemy of these. As far as I know all, parts still available though including heritage shells...

As for Triumph Spitfires, there will be some 1500s around for the top end of your budget. I'm not sure on parts availability for these though, you would need to look into it.

Both are pretty poor to drive by modern standards (the rear suspension design of the Spitfire makes them a little unpredictable on the limit), slow, noisy, uncomfortable, but lovely to just drive around on a summers day... if they start

MX5, if bought carefully, for the same money will be a much, much better car but they're very common by comparison... If you like your Hondas, if you can find an unmolested one how about a CRX/Del Sol?

 

I'm a primary school teacher myself. The kids love my car! Kudos!

 

Had a couple myself. Now ancient enough to be a classic car, too.

Loads of tarty bits for them too. Although they're best minimalist.
