Default What Driver Training?

As in Walshy/Palmer type day courses. Has anyone done
one lately?

Iv'e heard of most and been looking at web sites.
I dont get much time in my car these days and
fancy a 'refresh' early this year. Going out for
an hour every other weekend in my Elise after
driving vans and Minis around is like expieriencing
the first drive all over again.

You know what its like after a track day, your
confidence is high, its been over four years since
I did one.

Russ I did the Walshy day a couple of years ago with Jo. Jo loved it and found it very useful. Me, I found it unfulfilling and he was very hit and miss in his teaching style.

Having chatted with MarkB shortly afterwards he said the same, you either get on with him or you don't. It's quite black and white. Mark reckoned I'd get on with Don palmer.

I did commentary on the day on SELOC (and I'llpost the link later) and to be fair to Walshy he did offer me another day for free

Thanks Chris, I cant find my login details on Seloc!

Essex is a fair trek from here, Palmer is closer but
more expensive. Do you know if there are days at
Hethel?

Russ.

Edit.. I think after looking at Don's site he may be the
one to go for.

Fair enough mate.

Hethel don't do training days, more like come and be scared in a Lotus by one of our drivers and they try one yourself type events I believe

I liked the Andy Walsh day a lot.
I'm planning on going back.

The question is.... do you want a Road driving day ( eg Ridedrive )
Some safe training ( as per Andy Walsh... and others )
Proper track tuition ( Airfield ) or ( race track )

Russ-I'd like some more track day driver training. I've done an Andy Walsh day and Kelk has it right-a marmite man. I enjoyed it thoroughly and learnt a lot.

I'm up north so if you find something that needs a shared cost please let me know.

Don Palmer usually has 3 or 4 people on his days, I'm sure if you decided to go with him you'd be able to get on the same day.

I really rated Don, he doesn't 'teach' in that he doesn't tell you what to do, he asks you questions and through the answers you give him, you effectively come to learn the techniques for yourself. It's a very powerful approach if you have an enquiring mind and are prepared to listen and contribute. I went to see him 5 years ago and what he taught me then is as fresh now as it was on the day - how many training courses can you say that for?

I haven't had formal tuition with Don but I have had a few minutes with him on the handling pan at Millbrook. You will need to listen and be active in any sessions with him, it's not like a normal teaching session.

I've also done a Walshy day and while I did get a lot of fun out of it I'm not really sure how useful it is.

I've also done training at Millbrook and Chobham proving grounds with John Lyons, and I can also recommend Cadence who can take you to Millbrook for something quite tailored and personal.

He is good, but if you want to go quick on track, why not book a track day + tuition?

Because one of the basics of being consistently fast on track, in any car, in any conditions is car control (and by car control I mean knowing what the car is doing and will do, not being on the limit the whole time).

Don gives you the rules for car control in a format you can translate into any car, in any conditions.

Then when you get tuition on a trackday, you can concentrate on having the instructor's advice on lines and braking points etc. (and the instructor can concentrate on these points, and not on hanging on for grim death as you understeer wildly into the gravel for the 47th time).
