Default What track day car?

I'm not seriously thinking about this, just kind of thinking what-if.

I don't have a garage or anywhere to store a car therefore it would have to be road legal, kept on the street and capable of being driven to the nurburgring (10 hour drive). However it could be a second car. It must be able to lap quicker, stay on track for longer ie the brakes stand up to 20 minutes of abuse and be at least as fun to drive as the S2000. So if there are upgrades to make to a car, they must be stipulated. Running costs can't be astronomical (hence no 911's mentioned)

Caterham/westfield is out as there's no way I'd keep one on the street. Budget is no more than

I was wondering when this post would pop up

I could see the track day bug growing at the Ring...

Exige S1 with K20A or an S2 Supercharged has got to be top. Not sure any BMW really makes a good track car. Often too heavy and that makes for a hard life on the brakes.

Not liking Dave's VXT?

Dan, Bit too exotic IMHO. Would like one, but I've heard (anecdotally admittedly) of them going pop on track days.

Mark, I'd forgotten about a VXT, I'll add that to the list. It would need suspension work though. And I was already completely smitten by the track bug.

The other way of looking at it is, the S makes an ok track car... If you sold it Im guessing it would be worth 19-20k?

Given your budget you could keep it and spend a few quid on it, therefore having a good trackday car, and still having a good day to day car. It could be vastly improved for a few grand.

Or - sell it and buy an 02 ish car for 13-14k and spend a bit more on tweaking it?

Just an option to throw in the pot...

I've always been tempted by the idea of a Honda'd Elise. Quite a lot of money to spend on mods though, at least if you buy a standardish but up to the job car you've got the resale potential.

Or buy something cheap (MR2 Turbo?) and then have money to spend on upgrading.

Also, move somewhere with a garage.

I know about the options of tweaking the S2000. Like I said this is a thought exercise. If I don't sell, I'll be doing wheels, R888's, Suspension (bilstein, nitron or Tein), ARB's, finish the bracing and oil cooler, acusump style thing.

But the brakes and the pics below are the reason why I'm at least looking at the options to change the car:

New 1000 miles previous:

Note how the tread blocks are shredded in places. the rips go deeper than the main rain channels. They need replacing. I've actually known this since I've got back to the ring, but I need to know what I'm going to do first.

Oh, I reckon realistically, an 05 with 40k miles on it isn't going to be worth much more than
