What's the best hatchback?

Waistline sloping the wrong way & 14" wheels. Funny how fashions change! One of Giugiaro's most satisfying designs, even if those post-facelift bumpers made the overhangs look ridiculous.
They've STILL not fixed the funny gearchange & pedals and the better engine location is ruined by the huuuge wheels & weight/bulk of the modern ones. 30 years' progress for you...
I had one of the above, on a D plate in dark grey with a newly rebuilt engine (as featured in the MkII GTi 8v).
I bought it for 200 quid at an auction, enjoyed looking at it for a year and sold it again for the same money. It was a hoot to drive.

Polo, that kind of thing (has the creature comforts, one step up in 'cred' from a French hatchback wit da yoof - German, innit).
It's not bad. But bloody hell, cars seem very expensive these days!
I haven't bought a new car for 7 years, but I'm sure that a small hatchback for £10K would have come with at least remote central locking back then.
Ho hum.
The Polo's not bad actually. Only a 1.4 with 60bhp (
sorry...it makes me giggle that I am having to contemplate these sort of cars now).Going to have a look at a Jazz, and even see what these Kias have to offer.
As Mark says, I think most of the other suggestions are going to be out of the question for my bro's insurance prospects.

Didn't realise VW owned 20% of Suzuki....
