And you thought the S2000 was too much
Does anyone really care what car you drive these days?
My boss is on a good wedge - just short of six figures. He drives round in a clapped out 1.6 Astra LS. Loves it too! Bearing in mind he could get a top spec BMW 5 series Diesel if he wanted.
There are always badge monkeys and the 116d drivers are probably just that but i dont think thats accurate with this car, in fact i'd go as far as to say its function over form to buy it.
I'm not sure about that vast majority statement, the 3 series is nice inside but was more than i wanted to spend when we bought the golf, the 1er was too ugly

+1 I vaguely recall a picture over the winter of a 1 series with snow chains on the front

TBH when my beater goes I will consider a 1 series it is a good RWD compact package and has little to compete with it in that repsect

IIRC the main criticism of the 1er at launch was the lack of rear leg room and the very small boot. For many hatchback buyers, this makes it a significantly worse car than the more practical A3/Focus/Golf etc. Especially given that it cost significantly more than the latter two on that list.
However, it's largely been sold to a different demographic than the Golf/Focus (but similar to the A3) and with the excellent company car benefits, it's sold well.

Lotus Talbot Sunbeam.
Clio V6 (if there are any left).
Zcars mini.
Suzuki Cappuccino/Diahatsu Copen/Honda Beat.
Lexus LS200/Toyota Altezza (bit bigger)
Silvia/Soarer (bit bigger again)
E30 320/330 (all oxidised/messed with by chavs by now)
There are a billion cars you could get that are small, RWD fun that would keep you out of a 1 series.
That Clio would kill you though - it would be sitting in your garage working out how it was going to kill you.

What's going on here?? Are we talking about the same car? That's a 1M in the photo isn't it...? The 300-odd HP, rear-drive, short wheel base almost faster than an M3 piece of M-division's finest?!
