Default Clutch slipping

So for the last 2-3 days, I have noticed what I thought was my clutch starting to slip, it would happen during daily driving, when going from 2nd to 3rd normally, where I would accelerate decently (1/3 throttle) to move along with traffic, and I noticed what I thought was the rpms climbing faster and the MPH not corresponding.

Well tonight it was confirm, I was in 6th on I40 on the way home and mashed the gas to pull a little ahead of someone to get in front of them and the clutch slipped and the revs got on up to almost 7k, but I could tell it wasn't completely missing.

So now I have a few questions:

1: How long do you think I have left on it? Car has almost 74,000 miles on it and it may be on the original clutch

2: What clutch should I get? This is my DD, and I may go boost (s/c) down the road but not for a while, if at all.

3: Who can I get to install it that will do a QUALITY job without messing stuff up. I don't trust dealers to install aftermaket stuff.

4: Should I add a lightened flywheel or anything else while they are down there? I have read the flywheels don't do a lot in our cars.

Thanks for all the input. I have been lucky, I've owned 5 manual tranny cars and never kept any of them long enough to need a clutch. Thanks everyone

See the " Clutch install in the Carolinas" thread below.

They routinely install clutches in S2000's and are fellow SCCA Racers. Be sure you talk to Rex.

As for Flywheel and clutch combo, Rex installed my Comptech and ACT Stage 1 clutch.

There is a noticable difference on the street, but you'll notice it more if you Autocross or do track days.

So VFROOOM, how do you like the comptech flywheel? So I am anticipating this being about a $1000 job after I buy a clutch and have it put in. Does this sound about right?

So the Act Stage 1 is a good choice? Any other recommendations?

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I like it very much......(b'cause I usually win my SCCA Auto-X Class-B-Street Prepared).

I'm a fan of the comptech flywheel too. It was bittersweet to pull it off of my street car when replacing the engine. It's eventually going in my track car, though.

Before I say anything just know this is all based on stuff I have read on this sight.

First of all, I wouldn't go to a lighter flywheel than the 13lb flywheel that comes on AP1s. Talk to Yves and several other guys that daily drive their car and put on a light weight flywheel. It can become a pain to drive normally, because the revs drop so fast. I already bought a resurfaced AP1 flywheel to use on my next clutch setup. I will save like 8-9 lbs over my heavy ass AP2 flywheel.

Next, I would really do a lot of researching on clutches before you decide on one. I am anal about this stuff and have been searching for over a month. Of course I have time, my clutch isn't gone yet, but I can make it slip pretty easy if I drive the car hard.

Believe me, if you are thinking about going FI sometime, you probably will, so go ahead and get a clutch that can handle a mild FI setup.

Also, if you daily drive your car, try to find a clutch that has close to stock pedal pressure. Most ACT clutches improve pedal pressure quite a bit, which may be fine for weekend driving, but if you drive it everyday, it may get old.

I am going with the Clutchmasters stage 3 clutch. It has like OEM pedal pressure with slightly more aggressive engagement (again based on what I have read). It seems like it is around 200% holding power over stock, but I know it will hold 400whp set ups. Seems like a great DD clutch setup and will allow you to go FI later.

If I were you Josh, I would save money on a new flywheel, get yours resurfaced (if it needs it) and spend that money on a clutch like the clutchmasters. I have also heard good things about Competition Clutches. I know a lot of guys on this site use them, but the pedal pressure and engagement (on a clutch with similar power holding capacity to the Clutchmasters stage 3) seems to be a bit more aggressive. I've also heard that CC chatter more than the clutchmasters, which probably will chatter some, like most after market clutches.

Sorry for that long ass post, just trying to share my research.

I think airgate's clutch had about 132k on it when we replaced it. You drive about as slow as he does, so you're probably good for another 20k or so... <--- Raul loves that guy.
