Default Emissions Testing Questions

I've moved here to NC recently from Florida, where there is no emissions testing. I'm looking at purchasing an out of state turbo s2k that uses AEM EMS. The problem with that is of course that it does not interface with OBD II and would fail emissions.

So, short of moving to a different EMS, how does one go about passing emissions in NC? Are there any "lenient" shops out there? PM me if you have any info. Thanks

You don't say which county you are in. Not all counties require emissions tests.

Here is a link that will tell if you have emissions in your county

I am in Wake county, which is required.

I'm currently driving around my 300zx, which is registered in FL.

You'll need to swap it out with a factory unit to clear and be able to drive around on that unit for 100 miles or so in order for you to pass. Otherwise, you need to find a way to register the car in a county that doesn't require emissions.

Yeah I figured this was the only way to get around it. I'd rather just bribe a tester lol.

Good luck. Cheating the system will cost the shop $40k if they get caught.

I suggest either building spool-pieces and switching to a v-band setup for easy yearly swaps, or just spending the couple of hours to pipe enough stuff back on to set all the stock ecu's ready states. Some even go as far as a EMU to drive everything just for emissions. It's not smog, but all the codes must read clear and all the ready states must be checked in the ecu.

Safe bet? Switch to OEM ECU w/ Hondata flash pro and a retune. Should be a few extra $$$ on your end, but not much for a trade.

If it's an AP2. AP1's are SOL. You can go KPRO and hope the shop doesn't ask why your RSX is a two seater. I forget hondata exists most of the time.

Sorry TOTALLY but if you are in Raleigh please come on out to Toy's for Tot's. I am sure there will be several folks that can give you some advice and it is for a great cause.

It doesn't matter what you are driving.

Couldn't you have 'kept' your licence and vehicle registered in FL to avoid this shenanigan's? I know someone who lived in FL years ago, lived in NC for 4 years and then moved to CA and STILL has his valid DL and cars registered in FL at that old address?!! I am currently looking into getting a fake or real FL address for my current and future cars so I won't have to deal with this ODBII and 'Safety' issue anymore..

Can I get away with getting my car inspected in a county that's not on this list to avoid the ODBII hassle?
