Half an inch of snow shuts down the Triangle
First off, let me say that I grew up in Florida, so I'll be the first to admit that I'm no winter weather expert. However ...
Complete gridlock!? Children having to spend the night in their schools!? From less than an inch of snow!? I don't get it. I really, really don't get it.
Anyway, I'm curious what those who have lived in places with harsh winters make of all this. Is it just that the DOT doesn't have enough salt/sand trucks? Is it that the winters aren't bad enough to warrant winter tires, coupled with folks who don't have enough experience driving in wintery conditions. Does our particular climate (cold but not that cold) tend to cause more ice? I mean, yes it snowed, and yes it was somewhat unexpected, but it just didn't seem bad enough to cause the complete havoc that it did.
Okay, enough venting. Thanks for listening.

Yes, NC gets lots of ice, but not lots of snow. Of course, you are also dealing with people who did not grow up in snow and a state that has poor snow management ability.
Remember when you lived up north and the roads would be tended before and during a storm, so that the roads would be drivable the next day? That just doesn't happen down here. Add to that the idiots who don't know anything about driving on snow, but think that they are invincible in their SUVs, and you have gridlock.

When I first moved here I thought it was funny, but then it became really annoying how freaked out everyone would get over the foul weather.
Its true there is not a lot of opportunity to learn to drive in the snow and ice, and there are not nearly enough slag trucks and snow plows so you just have to deal with it.
I understand your frustration but you just have to let it go.

My wife and I also moved here from WI 5 years ago. We are still amazed at the lack of skill in dealing with weather.
Rant alert ...
It's not the day of snow closing that bothers me so much as keeping schools closed for 4 days after the snow has stopped waiting for the streets to melt before they feel safe reopening things. And all of those children we are trying to keep safe somehow manage to make it to the mall safely.
Rant over.
I think I'll just spend the time the winter in the garage polishing and praying for spring and twisties.

I grew up in vermont, the state doesn't have the budget for enough salt and sand, secondly people in this state can not drive, in addition they freakout and talegate in at the first sign of bad weather

Just kidding!
I 've been here for 26 years and I know exactly how you feel.
P.S. I'm 26 years old.
Keep in mind that the news isn't always very accurate at predicting snowfall in the non mountainous regions of NC. Hickory was supposed to get some flurries around noon yesterday. It looked like it could snow, but didn't. The school system's philosophy about school closings is that it is worth it for schools to be closed and avoid any negligence with regards to an accident involving a child's death. I did hear about the 6-8 hour Raleigh gridlock yesterday. I thought DC metro was bad!
^ DC Metro was bad on Wed...Absolute gridlock! Between snow and everyone leaving work early and many streets downtown closed for the Inauguration, it was about the worst ever. And that is saying something!
