I am driving through towards miami from the NY area. Any places where I should be really careful driving around? How bad are the cops? How fast should I go? I have a passport 8500 detector...thanks in advance

yeah, the state troopers down here do get a hard on for speeders in sports cars....I highly reccommend keeping <15 of the posted speed limit, and <10 if you can.

On a trip down to Orlando last october I got hit by laser in north florida (I-95 south of Jacksonville). The cop was on a bridge with the laser gun and another was picking up the offenders further up the highway. It was the first time my detector has ever been hit by laser and boy did it make a racket. Luckily the cop giving out the tickets was busy with someone else so i got away with it.

In North Carolina, no, they are not illegal. However, many of the cops/troopers use "instant-on" to catch speeding motorists.

I don't think South Carolina outlaws radar detectors, but I'm not sure. I remember when my wife and I took her Pilot down into Miami in September. Not a single cop/trooper on 95 in South Carolina. Going down and coming up.

However, Georgia and Florida made up for that. We saw nearly as many cop cars as regular folks driving.

NC is not that bad if you drive with a little common sense. The worst place for cops that I have ever found is Virginia! Every time I go through there I see at least 1 every 4 miles, and also .There are signs saying Speed checked from aircraft!! What are we coming to here, speed checked from cameras (soon), aircraft.

I am from VA and currently living in NC. I can tell you that once you get through VA it is smooth sailing until FLA. VA and FLA are the worst, in my opinion, about the number of cops on the highways. My senior year of college we drove from DC to Miami for spring break, and once we got to FLA we saw quite a few cops all the way down 95.

If you get caught using your radar detector in VA it is a $40.00 fine plus court costs of around $47.00. Also a speeding ticket in VA will cost you $5 for every mile over the limit on the highway plus the standard court costs. I have more than enough experience dealing with speeding tickets in VA. I have yet to deal with the NC police and I have been living here for a year and a half. Granted I imagine they patrol 85 a lot less than 95, just my opinion.
