I have to say that I agree with Ron, very well said.
At the end of the day, there will be people who want to "play the system" and get something for nothing.
My disagreement comes when people who geniunely want to improve their lives can't because of stupid politics. I don't care what side is doing the "politicing", I just care about the end result.
There are many many things that are right, and wrong, with this country - imho it's about fixing or at least improving the "wrong" and adding to the "right". Wrong and right are determined by your own beliefs and moral structures, but growing up around a very diverse group of people and being middle class (but coming from a def. less than middle class background on both sides of the family) - it gives you perspective.
Yes, if I end up being a billionaire, I'll want to keep as much of that $$ as I can. BUT - If I was on the opposite "side of hte tracks" so to speak and had to fight tooth and nail for EVERYTHING, I'd want a government that provided the means for me to get ahead, for me to improve my life.. I think a lot of people "play the system" becuase it's easy and in some cases, there aren't any viable alternatives.
You can't choose what family you're born into, what country you're born to live in, or how much wealth the family you're born into has. Everyone has a differing chance of success at the lottery of life from the OUTSET, no matter what we want. I just think that the government should be able to help those who want to help themselves and imrpove their situation in life.
I'm a topian idealistic sop, and I'm well aware. I do what I can, that's all anyone can ask.
Also, I agree with an "interview" of sorts before you have kids, it sounds silly but srsly, some people just shouldn't be havin' babies!

IMO the most sensible idea to date... Not perfect, but far better than what we have...
Only problem is, is that it'll never probably be adopted b/c it totally reverses power from govt. to the people... That would make the govt. feel helpless and unwanted and no one will depend on them any more...
Yes, Maniac I listen to Boortz everyday and try to catch Michael Savage when I can too...

OK, so let me express my satisfaction with the outcome of the election. Sure the Dems did better than they expected, won BOTH houses. Great! New power shift.
That's the part that disappoints me, just like Ron relates about Rove's objectives. I should not be about power. Our government is paralysed by partisan politics, so I hope that the new power brokers can show some sense and look towards statesmanship. I spend enough time in Europe, mostly France, to know that I applaud their commitment to social well being. But they also have a class structure that very much inhibits personal growth and can be downright discriminatory. They also have a hideous unemployment rate. It is a great place to visit and I have good friends there, but I would not want to live there.
That said, the US needs, desperately so, to become a world citizen, and not the gorilla we have been for the last 6 years. The US consumes 12 times its area-based share of natural resources. Europe consumes at a rate of 5 times its "footprint." Better, but still in excess. I had an opportunity to visit Africa (Senegal) this year, and one quickly recognizes what subsistence means. So, although it may sound like economic or political socialism, we cannot just continue viewing "right" as what's right for the US.
Back to my original point, Congress has had a turnover; it is up to both sides to show leadership. That's it, I'm done.
