Info around Boone, NC
Hi there! I will be attending Appalachian State University for the month of July in Boone, NC and I will be bringing my S2K with me. Unfortunately, I will be missing the meet you already have scheduled at the end of June. My weekends are pretty much clear.
I intend on hiking Grandfather Mountain and other trails in the area and attending the Highland Games in mid-July. Of course, driving the Blue Ridge Parkway is on my list.
My husband might bring the mountain bikes up one weekend while visiting. Do you have any other suggestions for me?
If there is anyone near there and you want to meet up, let me know.

I strongly suggest you go to Appalachian Angler and try flyfishing. Even if you haven't done it before you'll have a blast! The guides at Ap. Angler are super and can show you great streams to fish around Grandfather Mountain. They also do float trips on the Watauga and Holston Rivers. They've got all the equipment youl'll need.
Other than that, you could:
visit Blowing Rock (both the town and the rock),
see the mile high bridge and zoo at Grandfather Mountain,
drive the Blue Ridge Parkway,
visit the Builtmore Estate in Ashville (plan to spend a whole day touring the mansion, winery and gardens),
go to Linville and hike to the Linville Falls,
visit Lake Lure at Cherokee and while there,
hike the trails around Chimney Rock,
and if you're into golf, there are great courses around Grandfather Mountain.
Oh yea, you won't be too far from Deals Gap and the Tail of the Dragon. You've GOT to run the Dragon if you've never done that before. Mack (screen name and real name) is a Community Organizer in Knoxville and can help woth info about the Dragon or you can go here for more info. Also, check out this thread and other in the same forum.

Ditto on Appalachian Angler, I've used them several times. Also, there are some fun roads near there to drive (Shulls Mill Rd) that makes a cutover to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
to add to Mybad's list:
- lots of shopping in Boone and Blowing Rock, the General Store and Footsloggers are my favs for gear
- go to the local bike shops and ask for the best trails (boone bikes over on 321 and also Rock and Roll sports on 421)
- Price lake is a nice place to camp, fish, and canoe at (they rent them) not far from 321 and the Parkway
- the route we took from Asheville to the Parkway at Linville during S2kDays '01 was sweet, I think it was 80 North to the Parkway that was a blast. I plan to find it again this Aug.
- Cheeseburger in Paradise in Blowing Rock has some really great burgers
I will be in Blowing Rock Aug 3-8 if anyone wants to meet up.

Welcome to the area!
I live in Morganton and would love to join you for some rides. I know of some great local roads, a few of which even approach the dragon in level of fun and are much closer. It is a beautiful area and I'm sure that you will enjoy it. Email me some time after you get settled, if you are interested in meeting up. Any other s2000's are more than welcome to join us.
