the closest to wingate and not a bad area will be Indian Trail IMO... is like 10 min Closer to wingate than matthews 
actually is between Monroe and Matthews .... Monroe it is kinda bad... I used to work like 5 min from Wingate Univ. and it used to take me 30 min on rush hours.... the only bad think about Indian Trail is that there is not much apartments but is constantly growing....or Lake Park which is like a Huge nice subdivision in Indian Trail... Good info.....Thanks everyone for your continued input. We have found some good looking houses online in Indian Trail so that might just be where we end up. Either way it won't be long until we're down there. Maybe I will get to meet some of you for
