My first speeding ticket
Dangnabbit in-a-way,
Well I got my first ever speeding ticket today in Durham. Deputy stated he clocked me at 72 in a 45. I was heading around a corner and on a beautiful sunday afternoon, spotted him and hit the brakes. Court date set for november. Anybody have any advice?
My record is spotless in NC but Ive only been here for 2 years now. I have an illegal U-turn like 15 years ago and a wreckless driving leading to an accident at 25mph about 8 years ago back in CO.
Anybody know what I can expect as far as points and fees?
Just for the record, this is why I like to track and autocross but it was so nice out and the roads were so curvy. Maybe I should just get a prius.

I feel your pain. There is hope for you. I got my first speeding ticket in 6 years last month. I was clocked at 63 in a 45. I got a lawyer, $365 later, it was dropped and recorded as improper/dysfunctional equipment. I don't know if this is a local thing, (I live an hour south of you) but it is worth it if you can get out of the fine. You will save big with insurance if a lawyer can help. Hope this helps...

Damn, at least I know Im not alone. I think Ill give Tim a call since like 8 people have recommended him to me.
-chanjunc, Im sorry youve gotten yourself in the same boat, Ive heard 3 things. 1) Get a lawyer and let'em work law voodoo, 2) Go on your own if you have a clean record and the DA will say something along the lines of "Wow I probably wont see a record this clean for another year", and drop you to the magical 9 over for no insurance points, 3) Declare prayer for judgement which means you have to keep your nose clean for ~3 years and the charges are dropped. Im no expert since this is my first but I hope this helps. Im going with law voodoo.

you dont need a lawyer.
trust me.
ive dealt with plenty of speeding tickets with and without lawyers.
used to date a lawyer and worked at a law firm for 6 years.
just go to court.
if its in wake co, you will go to disposition court on the 1st floor.
stand in line, the DA will offer you to reduce it to 9 over.
pay your fine and court cost and be done.
OR
you can PJC it out but you better not get any more tickets for 3 years.
PJC = your insurance and everything will stay the same.
reduced = your insurance may go up.
either way, bring about $200 with you.
a lawyer will do pretty much the exact same thing.
he would prob get you a pjc though so youre happier with the outcome.
good luck.

BTW what EXACTLY did the cop write the ticket for?
thats high enough up there that he could have written it for careless and wreckless.
if you got that.. DEF get a lawyer.
if its just speeding, go yourself and PJC it out.
i think the court cost is like $120.
that should be all you have to pay if you take a PJC
