Outer Banks Hotel Recommendations?
Hi All,
My wife and I (and the s2k of course) are going on vacation the first week of June. We want to stay 2 to 3 days in the Outer Banks. We don't have a specific area in mind. We just want to spend a few days touring the different towns in the Outer Banks. Anyone have any hotel recommendations?
Thanks,
Dean

During the Outer Banks Run, we stayed at the Comfort Inn in Kill Devil Hills directly across from the Kitty Hawk Memorial and on the Ocean.

The accommodations were decent but nothing to really talk about. Honestly, while I was there, I did not really see any "great" looking hotels that would seem to have above average accommodations. During that time of year, I would really suggest perhaps a quaint bed and breakfast. Those are simply awesome and only cost a bit more per night but truly worth it, IMO.

Excellent recommendation from one of my colleagues who is from an extremely old Eastern NC family (his moniker is followed by a "VI"):
"Suggest Ocracoke Island as best beach. We take the ferry (1/800/by/ferry) over from Swan Quarter or Cedar Island and stay at The Castle (innskeeper@thecastlebb.com) . Dinner at Howard's Pub or Cafe Atlantic and trip over to Portsmouth Island if the bugs aren't too bad. The Ocracoke beaches are the best in NC; fewer tourists on them. The ferry off the
north side of the island is short and leads you by Cape Hatteras and the lighthouse up to Nags Head and generally a crowded area. The Sanderling Inn in Duck is very nice and near another pretty lighthouse in Corolla. The Currituck Club is a good golf course nearby but remember if you are there during a weekend, it will be full of folks from D. C. and Norfolk who have destroyed the area with their big second homes."
Our report: The Castle and Okracoke are great -- thought that the whole Duck/Nags Head/Hatteras area was overbuilt and overcrowded -- Buxton is a little bit better. The Sanderling in Duck looked to be the best of the non-Okracoke places to stay. Would suggest a night at the Sanderling, a couple of days at the Castle and then, if you have time, go out the Cedar Island ferry to Beaufort and New Bern. You can just stay on Ocracoke and drive up to Duck and back in a day.
