Hey, does anyone know if you can open up the rear taillight housing, im thinking about tinting all the red parts black, and keeping the reveerse light and turnsignal white on the inside lights, i have the taillights with the chrome ring around the lights on the AP1s, if your my friend on facebook look at my profile picture and you can see what im talking about or just look at this link.

You can, but you have to heat them up to make the sealant come loose. Same process as the headlights.

i haven't done it myself, but from what i hear it's a hell of a lot more of a PITA than the headlights. i think a lot of people break them while trying to open them.

yea i had 3 sets of tail lights and the lens crack very easily, and when i say crack thats a understatment. i was about to do the same thing 2 weeks ago until it cracked =( so id say dont do it

 

just take your time, i cracked one myself, no fun, but i smoke all the lens... it looks good... good luck

 

you might want to get a spare to practice with.

 

I have done a SCHLOAD of headlights...never a problem. I've only practiced with a single pair of damaged tails that were given to me for practice. They cracked lickity-split!!! I'd never deliberately get into a set of tail lights if I had the opportunity (literally, folks have been just as willing to pay me for that service as well...but I steer clear because its too damned easy to have to 'own' the tail lights due to breakage ). I would not recommend it...but...it is your call .

The bottom line issue with the tails is that the clear cover/half is soooo flat that there is no longitudinal strength available in the plastic when attempting to pry the two halves apart. And the clear plastic wants to crack right around the [near 90-degree] corner when attempting to separate.

And if you *are* successful, then watch out when you reseal them too! Our headlights are very forgiving in this regard as, once mounted, any bead of sealant is 'hidden' behind the fender & bumpers. Not true of the rear tail lights... The seam for the two halves is right there for everyone to see. Apply too much sealant...squeeze the halves together...and you'll see a goober of a mess trapped inside the tail lights.

thanks, w1ngman, i was actually about to ask you about the Led light halo install and if you had ever done it on a set of rears? but now I know, thanks, may just try to find a pair of broken ones and practice, we'll just see. thanks, for your input

 

I have done it, I modded mine. I didn't break them, but they are VERY fragile.

Cook them just as you would headlights to soften the sealant, just be careful prying open because they are THIN and crack / break easily.\

I painted my corner reflectors to match the housing. Almost "mulderizing" the rears if you will. I left a small opening for the light to keep coming out from.
