Default Rear Axle Nut Fix

Recently I've heard clicking noises from the rear, which means it's time to retorque the rear axle nuts. I did my research and it looks like an easy enough fix.

However, I don't have a 36-mm socket, nor do I have a breaker bar and/or cheater pipe that is beefy enough (36"+) to apply the necessary ~300 ft-lb of torque. Does anyone near the Raleigh area already have these tools for me to borrow briefly? I'm assuming it won't take much time as long as I can get a good mechanical advantage with a long breaker bar / pipe.

Just thought I'd ask before going out and spending money on a huge socket I probably won't use again

It is 220ftlbs. If I were you I would spend the couple of bucks and buy new axle nuts.

I have the tools to do it.

does it happen between reverse and forward? mine did. it would pop every now and then. i retorque mine with new nuts and it seems to loosen after time. so a friend mechanic who owned an S told me, use a impact gun and crank it down. have not had this problem since. i'm a mechanic and over torquing seemed wrong, but that solved the reoccurring issue with this. good luck.

Yeah, it's the one or two pops when transitioning between forward and reverse.

Wadzii, would you mind taking care of it if I swing by some time in the near future? I was planning on doing it myself, but my left hand is currently in a cast

Mine sounded like the brake pad or something like the wear indicator on the pads were just dragging on the rotor up to about 25 MPH and sped up and slowed down with rotation. Once over 25 or 30 I just don't think you could hear it any longer.

I had the same noise and retorqed the axle nuts but the noise ended up being a rear wheel bearing. I replaced both rear bearings and the noise is gone. You might want to check your wheel bearings.
