At my office today, I asked my folks to clear the lawn of our usual "FREE PHONES" banner. My associates seemed surprised from my request. I then shared with them that I wanted the lawn to be clear in respect for tomorrow, September 11th.

Then, one of my associates said, "Geez, it's been 2 years, when are folks gonna forget." I was shocked to hear this from one of my associates and I was quick to answer her back. "We can never forget," I replied.

I can't honestly recall a day where I did not think back on the events of 9/11. Forgetting, for me, would be a crime for those who lost their lives and for the innocence we all lost that tragic day.

Our American Flag outside of the office will be flown at half-staff tomorrow beginning at 8:46am.

I hope that September 11th, 2003 finds you at peace and with the ones you love and care for.

What will you be doing to remember September 11th?

Two years ago today I was on shift at the fire department. At 8:46 I was in front of the station doing the daily checkoff on the ladder truck when somebody came outside yelling. "You have got to see this, an airplane just hit the world trade center!" I hurried inside with the rest of the shift watching the tv wondering what had happened. Was it an accident? Was it terrorists? As the second aircraft struck and later both towers came crashing down and the Pentagon was struck we all knew that we were living during a moment that would change the world forever. As we watched the buildings fall knowing that hundreds of firefighters were inside there was no time to be in shock. The station was bordered by Ft. Bragg on one side and Pope Air Force Base on the other. We were sitting in the middle of the largest military complex in the United States while our country was under attack! The rest of the day was spent preparing for the worst by gathering up supplies, generators, and fuel. The station was secured and even body armor was passed out, every possible precaution was taken. Seeing the pentagon destroyed on live television takes away any sense of security that you had. You literally could look down the street and see the barriers being erected at the entrances to the military bases. This resulted in traffic being at a complete standstill for as far as you could see. As the world looked on in shock and disbelief, military and public safety professionals nationwide were working non-stop to protect the country. I knew as it was happening that it would be a day that I would never, ever be able to forget.

I had the day off and had taken my Prelude to Autopark Honda to get a radiator installed. They said it would only take an hour or so, so I was going to wait there. It wound up taking them about 7 hours. They only charged me for 1 hour of labor. Standing around the tiny TV in the service lounge with a huge crowd of salesmen, customers, and mechanics, it never even crossed my mind that I had been there all day. I pray we never see a day like that again.

I was getting live updates from my 2-way pager and my fire department pager in the middle of an announcement where our firm laid-off hundreds of employees. Things moved from bad (lay-off) to very bad (WTC) to worse (Pentagon & Penn)... It is hard to even comprehend the sacrifice.

Many things happened to me in 2001that I will never forget. The loss of my Dad was the most devastating.
The attacks in New York, Arlington, and Shanksville will live in my memory for as long as I live.
Many Americans fly our flag at half staff on the anniversary of that day. I fly my flag proudly on my house and my S2000 every day.

My hope is that the nation will someday recover and return to an an honorable place in the world.(That is not a political statement)

I stopped on my way into work today to look at a display that the Charlotte Firefighters and volunteers put out at the old firefighting tower on Monroe Rd.

Volunteers put out 2,997 small American flags (the number of Americans killed in the attack) in the shape of the 2 towers on a large lawn. It was very cool.
:

It was very memorable and inspiring. My personal commemoration each year involves listening to Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising" (his 9/11 tribute album) start to finish. We have so much to be grateful for.

I remember I was in my 7th grade english class when I found out and we turned on the tv and watched the second tower get hit. When the bell rang for us to change classes nobody moved bc we were all so shocked and everyone just stayed in whatever class they were in and watched the news in horror. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families that lost their loved ones and all the heroic firefighters and police. Sometimes we just don't know how lucky we really are. I will NEVER forget what happened that day. GOD BLESS AMERICA!
