Who's traveling to the path of totality to see it? We'll be driving to Dallas from LA to stay with friends in Frisco, TX and set up the 8" LX200 somewhere around Waxahatchie, TX near the center line to see and shoot the eclipse. We used to tailgate with them before USC games for many years. Her job moved when T Mobile moved its HQ from LA to Dallas. This will be our 10th total or annular eclipse (Roundup, MT, Cabo San Lucas, Catalina Island, Aruba, Munich, Puerto Vallarta, St. George, UT, Salem, OR, and Richfield, UT). When totality hits it gets dark and you can see stars and planets. The shadow of the moon races by on the ground at 2,200 mph. It gets 20-30° colder. Nocturnal animals come out. First you see Bailey's Beads, the last light of the sun shining through the valleys and canyons on the surface of the moon. Then you see the diamond ring effect. Then the corona, which is the sun's atmosphere, is visible:
We're shooting and observing with a Tamron G2 150-600 zoom lens and a 1.4x Tamron teleconverter matched to that lens and Nikon D3400 mounted piggyback on a Meade 8" LX200.. Everything will have #5 neutral density filters, which cut the light down to 1/100,000th. Pardon the sideways image.
You must use eclipse glasses or a #5 neutral density filter (for cameras, binoculars, or telescopes) which cuts the light down to 1/100,000th -- or risk possible eye damage. Path of totality through US and eclipie glasses here: https://mail.yahoo.com/d/folders/1/m...fhJ5A3qgETKk9U

I wonder what the animals in the woods are going to think during the eclipse.
We were with a big group of astronomers that saw and shot the 1991 total eclipse. We were on a Mexican farm near Cabo San Lucas. When it got dark, the cows came home.
We camped in Joshua Tree the year you were in Oregon RB, had glasses from the Eye Dr, almost forgot to look up as we were on a hike lots of people were on the hills there with their 's & lens Joshua has no lights so even on a reg night you see tons of 's
We had an awesome day today witnessing the eclipse We had perfect crystal clear skies The experience was surreal. I don't know how people think it might be boring, it was anything but that for us. We were among thousands of people who all started cheering at once , so cool.
Thanks to Raptor for giving us the motivation to do this today I am very glad to spend the day doing this today with my wife. We loved it.
