4/8 Total Solar Eclipse is coming right up.
I'm just now home from our Dallas trip. We thought the weather wasn't going to cooperate. We almost didn't make the trip. For 10 days the forecast was consistent for Dallas: socked in and maybe rain, right up to eclipse day. But just before first contact, the clouds became very intermittent and posed virtually no problem and just before first contact and no interference, especially during totality, which was perfect! We had the perfect eclipse viewing experience in Frisco, just north of Dallas. Only 2 min 40 sec of totality, but from our friends' backyard, away from the crowd. This was really the first time I viewed totality through my 8' Meade LX 200. In 2017 in Salem I had the times screwed up so I ended up just seeing totality through glasses. This was a unique experience, even though this was our 10th solar eclipse. The delicate features of the prominences were like nothing I've ever experiences or seen in any photos. I mostly skipped photographing totality and I'm really glad I did. The drive to Dallas and back (with 150 lbs of equipment), 3,000 miles, six long days of driving, was a killer but well worth it. Plus we got to see the eclipse and spend two days with our good friends who recently moved from la to Dallas. After 10 solar eclipses, we finally had the perfect eclipse experience. The LX200 made all the difference.
