Geez...can't people stay out of trouble for just a few days while I go on a trip?! 
Unfortunately, I've been out of the loop a little bit on this trip, because time for being online has not been plentiful, but I HAVE seen the pics in question.
My take is that the pics DID push the rules, but that the crackdown is as much personal as it is about violating board rules.
That said, Alex has known for ages that he pushes rules and he's been unpopular with some of the mods. He's old enough to make his own decisions and to take responsibility for them.
He chose to develop the reputation that he has and the only person he has to blame for that is himself.
As for the interpretive manner in which this site is moderated, I think it's all about having some guidelines and using good judgement to fill in the gaps is a valid manner to handle things...I just think that we're running a bit empty on both guidelines AND good judgement...
