You could ask others in a similar position, or possibly one of the HR types.

Pay is generally something you'd ask about at the end of an interview.

I JUST got told the girl who's desk I'm at is out b/c she got pink eye and I've been using her computer all morning I've since disinfected it....

Why do you think $17k is a big number? That's less than $100/employee, which for a law firm, is small potatoes.
