how about some car trivia. What does "GTO" stand for as it applies to Pontiac's new Holden Monaro based coupe?
It is named after a class within a racing series. Grand Touring Over (3 liters) Basically, a GTO is a racecar that is any make, manufacture, engine or chassis combination with an engine that is over 3 liters of displacement. GTU stands for Grand Touring Under. (3 liters) GTU is a racecar that has an engine that is under 3 liters of displacement. The GTU is lighter that it's bigger brother the GTO. The GTU's are allowed turbo chargers. Both classes were regulated by IMSA in terms of weight and horsepower. The GTO, GTU, GTP (Grand Touring Prototype) and GT Lights, (Grand Touring Prototypes little brother
) a total of 4 classes were re-classified in the mid-late 90's.Now it's GT1, GT2, GT3 as well as other classifications. There is so many classifications of cars, it's kinda hard to follow cause I don't follow the sport like I once used to.
Sorry for rambling
Any other race fans out there?
Former race fan...
I loved GTP with no $ limits, CART at INDY with big wings, NASCAR with no restricter-plates and big spoilers, and Formula 1 with active suspension. Guess I'm one of the few that doesn't care about the racing as much as just seeing the cars go fast.
Am I the only one that misses those days?
