Well, Jack, I think the difference is speed of engagement... When you "single" clutch (or "granny shift", as the F&F crowd like to say), you're using the synchromesh gears to slow down the gear shaft. Try applying gentle pressure against the gear gate, and then pushing it in. Another alternative is to rev-match while you're shifting. I used to feel that clunk mostly when shifting into 3rd (and of course being unable to downshift to 1st without rev-match).
When you double clutch, you're taking quite a bit more time before actually shoving the shifter into the gear, and you're also getting the shafts at the right speed by rev-matching (well, you should be).
Have fun, Jack. You're not hurting anything with clunky shifts, you're just creating some small amount of wear on the synchromesh.

)I just assumed that it doesn't clunk as much when I double clutch because the shaft revs are better matched, and I was wondering if you have the same observation. I'll be experimenting more.
These days, I'm mostly getting my car to look pretty. Claying them bloody rail dusts is a time consuming process, and I don't want to rush it. After two weekends, I've just only done the rear end of the car (behind the doors - with a few missed spots here and there).
I'll be polishing to get rid of swirl marks next, and waxing to prevent all this crap from happening again.

whats so weird about that....
