It is a fact of your life that the situation does not work in your favor. That's different than the process actually being broken. Therefore, you are ASSUMING it's broken because you don't like your personal outcome...

Oh.

But my point isn't that it's broken because it isn't easy for me. It's broken because it's IMPOSSIBLE for me, and others in the same situation as me. Wouldn't that be broken for a majority of people?

Though I suppose not, if I seem to be the only one bitchin' about it

Your assumption is that you and people in the same situation are the target or litmus test for a successful system. What if you're not?

The "broken" part of the system is that a college degree is somehow a requirement to get ahead.

Then UnkieT is right--it's only meant for the rich, and those who are well-prepared (i.e savings accounts and trust funds).

Damn, we just went full circle.

What's funny is, my history professor was talking about how he predicts education going back to the ancient ways: only meant for the rich and well-off. and a hierarchy system being established again.
I wasn't aware that we ever significantly shifted AWAY from the ancient ways...?

I think the requirement is borne more of laziness on the part of managers than necessarily any real benefit of the degree. There are exceptions...but as a rule, college simply proves that you can stick it out through a drawn out process and achieve a given goal. It's easier to compare college degrees than it is for managers to distill a variety of "apples and oranges" experiences.

That, and it's simply another way to set management apart from the "commoners"...

I applaud Brant for leading it around the turns here. He forgot one bit: it's not just the way "it is," but moreover, it is imperative that it stay this way or, get even more strenuous for the middle class and lower.
