I wanna Felt or a Look... but $1500 is average for them
My current ride cost me $1500...about 10 years ago!

Currently I'm planning on stepping up to a ridiculously priced bike that I expect to have forever...Independent Fabrication Ti Planet Cross.

There's some Felt that's between $700-$100K, IIRC.

. . . or maybe that's what the double-secret Team In Training price was (that I was being let in on).
They actually DO hit in that price range. They make good stuff. Buy the best frame you can...the rest can be easily upgraded...

Unkie what's the BA weather like in the fall?
Fall? What's that?

Indian summer up until the first week of November, then it gets "cold" (read: south of 70F).

Doesn't matter though - after August, you still have to pack two layers and a wind shell if you actually go into San Francisco.

This I know. . . there's a guy on my floor that built a Cervelo from Craigslist ads to the tune of ~$2K

MSRP on the Cervelo as a whole would have wound up ~$5K. C-records, the whole enchilada.

I figure, given my work and rehearsal schedules, I'd only ride 1-4 recreational hours a week, and maybe. . . maybe, commute to work 1 day a week in the summer.

Titanium would be overkill for me, but otherwise, have at it.

There's also the fact that I'm looking at getting a new Horn within the year. . . speaking of custom fabrication.

I'm shopping Ti for it's long-term durability. Been riding for years and don't anticipate stopping anytime soon. I want a versatile bike that can do dirt and trails and streets and even some light touring/commuting if I choose. I've had some off-road experience with cyclocross bikes and I LOVE it. Ti will enable me to get a frame that will likely never die...and be a good trade-off between durability and weight.

I'm downgrading my motorcycle and car budgets to accommodate the acquisition...

I'm on the fence about components, though. Campy, Shimano (Ultegra) or SRAM...??

I'll likely go with Ultegra to start...with Chris King hubs.
