UnkieT, it's been a while

Me and the might-as-well-be wifey are trying to save to move in to a nice(er) loft in either Downtown Oakland/Lake Merrit area, or SF.

So of course we need some bad-a furniture to go with it. Right now I have a 32" LCD TV, but want to upgrade to 40"+ when we move. So I want to get a nice sounding stereo system that can double as movie watching and for music for parties (so iPod dock is a must).

What speakers/receiver would you recommend? On a mildly tight budget so no B&O obviously

Downtown Oakland is a bargain - remember, if you move to San Francisco, you will be loosing A LOT of money on overhead. Oakland gives you easy access to San Francisco when you want it, but with a lot less monthly overhead.

As far as the Stereo/TV bit -

Don't upgrade either until you're moved in and assess what the new budget is.

That said, my new bargain reference looks like this:

Usher S520s
Jolida 1301A
Oppo Disc spinner and/or computer. - all of that for under $1K. If you need to go cheaper. . . uhhhh. . .

. . . I just helped a friend of mine buy a TV. I'd get a Samsung either new or old, and be done with it.

TV is definitely going to be a used Samsung. I got a used dynex 32" with 2 hdmi, 2 component, VGA, 720p on craigslist for $200

Yeah I found a sick ass Loft in Oakland near Embarcadero area with new huge kitchen, etc for like $1500 including parking. In SF same thing is like $2200-2500

I think what I'm looking for is something of an all-in-one receiver to have audio and video. My parents got a Harmon Kardon 7.1 on sale at fry's for like $300 and would like to have expandability. But I'm guessing maybe they're a waste of money?

What's a disc spinner/computer?

And I'd like to be able to start off with a 3.1 system at least. But those Usher speakers look real nice.

depending on when you usually watch TV/the lighting setup in future bad ass loft, go for a projector

(FYI: $2500/mo. is what I pay on my mortgage, give or take. . . ahem)

So, I'm not a big video nut. My main reason being is that I'm color blind, and so much of the top end stuff regarding color is lost on me. . . which means though, I shell out decent money for audio equipment.

2 excellent channels will trump 3.1 most of the time. The only time it doesn't is when the room is so big, that people are sitting in very disparate spots and can't hear both the left and right channels clearly.

The gains in raw sound from multiple drivers in a 3.1 system do not trump the coherency and imaging of fewer drivers in a 2 channel system.

As with vehicles - really, honest-to-God set your budget before you put the whole system together.

. . . oh yeah, and the Oppo is a DVD player. . . or, if you just want to use a computer, use a computer.
