For certain routers there is software that is user editable and less overhead. So you can get a faster router, precise control over the radio power, QOS, etc. It won't be better than a wired installation, but it can help a lot. For free.

That's pretty much how it works.

What the F is CS?

What I have at work: 1G over Cat5e going to a Cisco Nexus7010 ported out through the company's trunk line.

What I have at home: 1G over Cat5e going to the DSL modem (slower, older - probably 10/100/1000 defaulting to "slow") going over crusty old wiring to the CO. It sucks. . . badly.

I might have enough spare parts to pull off 10G CX4 within the house by the end of the year. . . which will be excellent for. . . not much of anything (except streaming pre-buffered movies to a non-existent TV).

GET WITH THE PROGRAM UNKIET!!!

Counter Strike. 1.6 or Source

The rest means nothing to me .

INTJ: I spoke with my brother (he's in NC) and said our Router (a 2wire unit) is programmable but it's too hard to explain how to change over the phone. Any thoughts?

Also, is there such thing as a female-female connection for cat5 cable? so I can plug two together to make a longer one?

Counter. . . Strike. . . riiiiiight.

Myth #664 about Unkie Trunkie: He plays video games. A lot.

Truth: Alas, I do not.

My day job is about 70% networking (the digital kind).

You can get a couple for cat5/cat5e, but your chances of dropped packets go through the roof.

My advice? Get a longer cat6 cable.

Actually, I think I may have 100ft of RJ-45 of some stripe (probably cat5) in my garage. . . you want it?

Well the thing is.. I have about 100ft of cable.. but the distance to go from my router in the living room.. up to the cieling (my parents hate having cords on the ground) all the way to my room is the length of the house

So.. I'd need like 200ish feet of cable.. and I don't wanna spend $60 on it, because I just spend $40 on a wireless card that's USELESS because I ping.

I was thinking about just cutting the cat5 open and splicing together.. well.. having my dad do it, but same thing. I've ripped apart a 10-wire cable for an ipod connector and he put it all back together perfectly

So you say I can't get a female/female connector? I dunno what a dropped packet is.

But yeah, if you don't want the cable, I'll take it!

You can get a female connector. . . the couplers are out there.

The question is, will the lossy signal result in equal or better performance than the wireless?

BTW: dropped packet - your information is sent in datagrams, or "packets" on the wire (or fiber). If your system drops a packet, it's not a HUGE deal. . . until you drop too many.

Splicing CAT5 or any other twisted pair cable is not a good idea unless you can maintain the same TPI (twists per inch) as the original cable. You'll only degrade the connection.
