When you partition the drive, you can run both instances simultaneously. It's not a huge deal, but it comes in handy for development purposes, sometimes.

I've fixed my original post. Sorry, with multiple partitions, you can't run the operating systems simultaneously. With virtual machines, you're running an OS (or multiple OSes) within an OS, so you're effectively running multiple computers simultaneously on one set of hardware.
