Carrots weren't orange until the 15th century. Bred to be orange (it is said) to taste better and tribute William of Orange.

Yellow (and bitter), red and purple (skinny). After the tasty orange ones were developed no one planted those others any more so they aren't around now. There are some wild ones but not reasonable to harvest and eat and not too tasty.
