I-Man just allows me access to other parts (the "environment") so I can verify fitment/clearance with my parts; an electronic library of the car.

OnStar, on the other hand, will be able to monitor your movements, driving habits, etc. Of course, that's one more reason not to buy GM

Perhaps we could use OnStar as a performance data logger.

Color me underwhelmed

Actually, to be honest, the OnStar concept is good. Frankly, I should be able to have my car connected to the net via cell-modem and I should be able to read OBD codes and the like from my living room. I just think it's 50% good and 50% gee-whiz + scary too!

Agreed. The *concept* of OnStar is a cool one but greatly underutilized. That too will change.

You are 100% right on, John.

In the next 25 years, cars will be utterly drive by wire (and using new technologies). Gigabit cellular modems will enable real-time data gathering (and control! :freak2) by the factory.

Your neighborhood repair shop will be able to get information on your car while it's parked in your garage.

and scary.

I don't know why you add 'scary'. That word has been used for decades to describe what's next and what is so scary about the state of technology today.

Scary is for the outsiders Chazmo... not you.

Don't worry - for every tracking technology they come up with, we'll find a way to circumvent it so that it looks like we're just driving down the road instead of hauling butt through a ....
