Given the situation in the Bawlmer/DC area, I'm not so sure having Big Brother watching is always a bad idea.

That's very, very true, Martin.

I think, seriously, the "big brother" concept does scare me. John, you're right... It's definitely not the tech that puts me off; it's the way this stuff could be used.

I'm not one of these guys who's totally freaked out over giving gov't (or business) the tools to invade privacy... I know many are, but not me. But with my car, maybe I am... I think it's just that I have this built-in need for certain areas of my life to be completely "free." Getting in my car and driving is one of those things.

I'm sure I'm not saying it well, but maybe you guys get my meaning.

[1984oink]Think of all the money we could generate - we've got GPS tracking on your car - you exceed the speed limit, we have a record of it, we send you the ticket. No need for photo radar, police chases, etc. And you can't fight it, because our voice recognition software registered you as the driver. And because we're trying to streamline the gov't, we've privatized the fine/collection process, and that company sells the information to a) business along your route, which in turn can spam you and b) insurance companies, which can adjust your insurance rates instantly. [/1984oink]

And I'll make money selling cloaking chips that show your car sitting at home all night

Oink - I fight dearly to hold onto any rights no matter how small. Freedom isn't free. It has sacrafices that go along with it. To me, I'm willing to accept those. Even at the cost of my life or anothers. - Oink

Very, very good point, John!!

Live free or die, Luke? The definition of freedom seems to me to be not entirely objective. But, perhaps that's another day's discussion!

Maybe now's the time, guys. I'm posting a new thread to kick this off. I'd love to hear what my PW friends have to say on the subject of freedom...

(I'll post the link here soon)
