^ Hmm, I'm trying to figure this out. I've got *one* impeller in my 8HP troy-bilt; that much I'm sure of... And, yeah, my blower is pretty lame unless there's at least 1.5" to scoop up. Of course, that's what shovels are for...

I suppose mine is a one-stage then. I'll tell you this, though, it throws the shit out of reasonable snow. Seems to me an additional impeller is just one more thing to fail though.
If its 8HP my guess is it is a 2 stage....most single stage are 3-5 HP range.

If it looks like this (my neighbors) then it is a 2 stage...the Auger is stage #1, and then an impeller grings/shoots the snow up through the chute (stage #2)

OIC, you're counting the auger as a different "stage" than the impeller? Yes, mine has both. The Auger spins slowly and chops the snow; the impeller blows the stuff right out the chute.

This is sounding kinda kinky, ain't it?

That's definitely a two stage. A single stage has the auger spinning fast, to both break the snow and also propel it out the chute; thus the need for a fair amount of snow to actually get good velocity out the chute.
