I hear you, red. Weird, eh? I'm asking my dealer right now why they do this. One of the threads said it had something to do with the hardtop, but I"m not buying it

According to threads I've read in the past, the tape was added to blend with the soft top better. Why they still paint and then tape.....good question. Maybe it's easier to paint the whole body with one go and it's cheaper to use the tape. Otherwise they would need to take extra special care to paint a small section black after already being painted once.

Yeah, that's what I thought, too ... it's probably more trouble to paint a small area black than just apply the tape. Then the customer gets a choice, too!

... yeah, if they actually told the customer

Red, if you decide to go for it, you're gonna probably have a tricky time because the tape's been baking on your car for a while. The adhesive on the tape seems to be what people bitch about when they try to remove it.

Best wishes. Lemme know what you do. I'm peeling mine off tomorrow after I comb through the threads again; since my car's new it should be relatively easy. famous last words......

My car was delivered without the tape. I just assumed that they stopped doing it for 2002. What year is yours Charlie?

Now that's interesting, PB. Mine's new. And, many others on the site have '02 models with tape (I know that because metallic blue is new for '02 and there's a thread on blue cars where we were talking about this). Did you ask the dealer to remove it, I wonder?
