Depending on the type of trails you ride, clipless are fantastic. However, if you're on super tight or technical trails that reward balance and the ability to do quick dabs to keep from falling more than pedaling efficiency, you might be better served with a set of good platform pedals (like BMX and some downhill bikes run).

However, if the choice is between pedals with toe clips and clipless...run clipless.
