our drives, root drive and all, come off my SAN systems. each disk has 2 or more physical paths back to my systems. we lost one disk, on a server that has of 2700 virtual harddrives connected to it.

When you say drives, you're talking about virtual drives or physical ones? Is that similar to mapping a network drive in windows, but of course more complex?

how are the hard drives in your servers connected? IDE, SATA, SCSI?
