Wishing I could WFH but I think we’re soon going into essential services mode which means I may not be doing my actual job until this blows over. Not stoked about the idea of possibly having to work at the hospital so I’m hoping it’s not necessary

I posted this in the right now thread but meant to post it here so sorry for the duplicate post.

Injecting a little bit of humor in to this does anyone besides me at times find some of the people that are signing behind the various government officials that are speaking at the press conferences somewhat humorous? The woman that is signing during the State of New Jersey press conference is making some really funny faces. She just stuck her tongue out and made a silly face when signing something. I'm not sure if it was editorial comment or if it actually meant to convey the tone of what was being said.

So, I used to work at the California School for The Blind, which was adjacent to the California School for The Deaf. To answer your question, the (good) translator's job is to demonstrate tone on top of the words being said. It's a form of acting-as-word-reinforcement, and usually rewards the quite demonstrative, especially in Public Address situations.

If you've ever seen the graceful sign language of say, The National Anthem, it's supposed to be kind of the opposite of that, because of the very nature of the communication (and context).
