The debate for dummies
Let's say you have cancer. You are told by your doctor that you can take treatments that will reduce you to being an invalid, but you'll live for 5 more years or you can live life like you want to and survive for 5 months.
Which road would you take?

Interesting how all of this ties together.
Suppose we say "yes to win the war, we do what's necessary.." Scratch, bite whatever... but the enemy is fought back. In doing so we "preserve" this society.
Or
Suppose we say, "stay true to our values". Fight the enemy within the guidelines of the Geneva Conv'n, or our church or what our Mum taught us... But in doing so we lose to an enemy that 'fights to win' using terrorism, beheadings etc.
Which is better?

Have we really preserved our society? We've preserved our lives and our nation, but much of that which made both great is gone, and our "great society" becomes one of fear and being watched 24/7.
(I'm finding myself being a proponent for something I may not actually support.)
