It is really strange how many people find out about significant life events via social media. I'm still of the old school and if it's something important, I tell people directly first.

I kind of disagree with this. I think social media has made the voice of the unheard and put it right in our face. A lot of events that have been kept on the down low by traditional media outlets are now brought to us via twitter/facebook/reddit.

Granted there's telling you close friends / SO about something you read in the papers but what facebook allows for is reaching the audience that you don't necessarily know but gets the word out about your cause, your situation, whatever that may be
