I jokingly suggested installing 1200 baud modems on all the computers and printing via modem - it would have been faster than Apple Talk.

They were probably PowerPCs. Came out around then and were very powerful for the time. That's around the time I was working in a Mac house.
Much like today, they were easy to use but not of much use.
