My parents couldn't afford $300 for me to play in the upper soccer program... much less thousands of dollars for a go-kart and transporting me all around to race. Any way you slice it, it is a sport that heavily favors kids from affluent families.

Memo Gidley grew up on a fishing boat and worked with his Dad. I think he didn't have much at all.
The sport DOES favour money drivers. There are a LOT of drivers to illustrate your point (Paul Tracy's dad used to pull his go-cart with his Rolls) but there are many who did it on there own.
