The use of the phrase "the big picture" is rather ironic, don't you think, since it has historically been the US that lacks in this area?

Brant, to some extent I agree. I mean, as a nation, we're not perfect. You have to keep in mind that trying to keep the world from destroying itself is a rather hefty task.

My take on the reluctance of the rest of the world is a little different.

First, I think that some of the claims you make are a little suspect...particularly the issue of not reading a French paper (assuming you could understand the language...I can't, either) because the readership bought a book you find reprehensible. Is it not possible that a large number of THEM find the topic to be equally disagreeable and were merely reading it to be informed of a different perspective?

I agree completely that Sadaam is an evil man and that the VAST quantities of money that his country generates in revenue each year go to support an infrastructure that supports HIS desires rather than the needs of the people he rules.

Does the US have the best intelligence in the world? Depends on your definition. If you mean signal intelligence (satellites, phone taps, etc) then the answer is probably yes. However, if you are talking tactically useful intelligence such as human intelligence then the answer is that we are woefully lacking and have for many years.

Speaking of the big picture, is it not possible that, since such a large segment of the global population seems to be opposed to, or at least hesitant about, the spectre of war that maybe it is the US that doesn't see the big picture?

Just asking. I spend a LOT of my day pondering these things because, basically, that is my job.
