The other 4 users on the network are all on wireless G... if I hook up a B adapater it slows everyone else down to B speeds.

It's a limitation of the wireless spec/design, which is independant of the device hooked up to the adaptor.
If all the computers are wireless cant you just move the cable modem/ router to where the Xbox is?
Positive, Mike. Everything will play together, but if you hook a B up, the entire router slows down to B speeds - so even though your client laptop is working at G speeds, the router will only send/receive at B speed.
Everything in our house is pretty constrained - the modem/router are in the other office because that's where the cable comes into the house. The $78 to get a wireless G adapter isn't that big of a deal, especially since I need to order some other stuff from newegg.

well DO IT already then

Only one cable feed in the house? Or is that your best spot for speed?

That's where the feed comes in. Every other outlet has gone through at least 2 extra splitters, so you're looking at 4-6 dB signal loss at the minimum (plus upwards of 100' of coax cable).
Does the 4-6 db really make a noticeable difference for networking?
