HIt it for ya RB and it was a yummy 1/2 BLT & cup of Tortilla Soup
your Cowboy Steak House was closed I wonder if they don't get going on everything up there till after Memorial Day? The only campground open was Barton Flats where we camped. The Ranger Lady said the other ones open next Friday
BLT's has a long history. It was originally BLT's. Then it was acquired by a British guy named Alan Davis who renamed it Kujo's after his dog - who was named after some Japanese legend. He was a real eccentric character who was fun to talk to. He retired with his Mexican citizen wife and moved to Puerto Vallarta. A young guy named Todd, a former computer nerd who went blind in one eye from looking at a computer monitor too much, bought it . A really nice young man. He also bought another restaurant in Big Bear and converted it to Northern Italian. He got financially overextended and lost both places. Cathy, the current owner, was the manager at Denny's down the street. She changed the name back to BLT's. Cathy is a crusty old woman., I think she's sick. We haven't seen her in a long while. I love the Italian sausage sandwich and the macaroni salad. We go with the dogs, sit outside, have lunch, and each have one or two little bottles, which each equals one glass, of Chardonnay.

You must be right about Cowboy Express closing for the winter. I did a search and couldn't find anything about permanent closure.

We used to go to Barton Flats on summer vacation when I was a little kid. I once lost a Kayak on Jenks Lake.

Odd that you decided to give this very detailed history RB since I neglected to give YOU a lil story

Here's mine
Spoiler

so yeah we kinda drove around a bit thru town then decided to hit your BLT place as we remembered it was good. Not busy , one guy eating and another just came in when we did. Kinda looked like your typical local MT. type if you know what I mean He goes around the from where we sat inside. An older gal is back there alone at a table. He gets a phone call ( still with me ) I can clearly hear him … " I'm at BLT's talking to Cathy " I looked over after hearing HER comments to him regarding her Health & Doctor BS on Medical shtuffz

she had I think an oxygen tube and looked yeah not in super good health poor thing. I wasn't being NOSEY just so close that I could hear the conversation kept referencing $ and even talked bout property behind her house getting zoned for low income housing ( which she sounded unhappy about )

before this turns into a book I will say that I couldn't help but feel for her. Sounded like Fire Wood costing $250.00 a cord was not helping her situation. By the time we left I came real close to walking over & handing her a benjamin but I didn't kinda wish I had if only to help her a lil.

I love that you know SO much bout that town

I still think you should consider a cabin ownership out near where that house that has the big Observatory so you could be w / them

Cathy has lung disease from chain smoking. She's gotten crabby. We looked for a cabin for a long time. We need one with a clear, unbroken view of the horizon for astronomy. There just aren't any. Trees in the way. My dream is to retire, get a place in Big Bear, build a high deck with an observatory dome, and mount a big 16" inch Schmidt Cassegrain scope (mine is 8") on a permanent pier. We haven't lived through a winter there, though. Big Red would be pretty useless in the snow. Out near what big observatory, the solar telescope on the North Shore? I don't remember much about Jenks Lake. I was very little. All I remember is this big lake that swallowed my kayak. Why would fire wood be $250 a cord? I've never heard of such a thing.

Well I still felt bad for her hearing her talking.

I know you've explained the cabin deal before but maybe someday

I will go see if I can find your kayak next time

Does seem high when there's SO many down trees around I'd think she could just get someone to go cut one up for her!

When she first bought the place, she was very friendly. She told us all about being the Dennys manager and all the plans she had for BLT's. Then each succeeding tine we saw her she was colder and crabbier. She chain smoked. One time we had lunch and went off to to do a cruise boat on the lake. I asked someone to put our leftovers in the refrigerator and we would come back for them later. When we came back to BLT's to get them she misunderstood and thought we had just gone off and forgot our food. She started berating me for being so stupid. I almost told her to stick it up her ass.
