[motorcityoink]Downtown Detroit is the epitome of urban decay and blight. Up until a few years ago, "Devil's Night" encompassed three or four nights prior to Halloween, when vandals/arsons would light fires in abandoned buildings and homes. 30~40 fires per night was not unusual - I think the record was over 100 fires one night (mid-1980's, I think).

It's not as bad as it used to be. There are 3 new casinos downtown, along with the new baseball and football (gridiron) stadiums, so a lot has been cleaned up. There are still places downriver I wouldn't venture after dark, and I won't even go during the day if I'm in my S.

However, I work 20 minutes north of downtown. A more glaring contrast one could not imagine. I even see the occasional A-M Vantage in our parking garage (I'll see if I can find a link to the towers I'm in). And I live another 40 minutes north of work, in what is sort of a lakes/resort/golf area. Sure, we have some crime at home, but nothing more than typical surburbia.[/motorcityoink]

Welcome home Kathy,

I'm sure there are more than just a few differences between Camarillo and the Olde Country. Did the mention what it means to get 'pissed' ? That one messed me up for a while. Funny you should mention Vauxhall. I owned a pink four door Vauxhall Viva while I was in Christchurch, NZ. That was right before my first Mini (the old style).

heh-heh, 'my first Mini'... sounds like a Fisher Price toy line!!!

James is right, all the pissed blokes and birds stagger around in the street. It was like a "dodge the drunk Brits" game, made more difficult because we only had like one glass of wine with dinner.

Then we went to this market by our hotel and they wouldn't sell any liquor either. What nonsense.

to California! Booze in the supermarket, 24 hours a day. (Actually I think you're banned between 2 and 6 am.)

Couldn't you get a drink in the hotel bar Kathy ??

Hotel bars are allowed to stay open for residents 24 hours a day if they want to ...... we have used this facility on more than one occasion

In fact, while I was back last month, we stayed in the hotel that my friend's wedding was in, (even though my parents live about 10 minutes away) just so that we could insist on the bar staying open until we were ready to go to bed, rather than them chucking us out at midnight !!!

Hell no! We were in a pretty small hotel so the bar was very quiet. I think they looked for an excuse to close up shop at 11:00 as well. I suppose we could have tried sneaking behind the bar and making off with some bottles of .

:wishes she would've thought of that while there:
